Taiwan: Exploring a Different China

Due to the upcoming Christmas holiday, the UMD study abroad group focusing on both Chinese language and culture will leave on 12/26, arrive on 12/27 in Taiwan, and be challenged by its first day of class on 12/28/2015 at Tamkang University ( 淡江大學) in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan.

A group of ten students selected through interviews will participate in this 3-credit winter course. In addition to studying traditional Mandarin Chinese, students will also enroll in classes examining the following questions:

1.      What are the highlights in the history of Taiwan in the past 400 hundred years?

2.      How do the social philosophical differ between Taiwanese and American societies?

3.      How has Taiwan been surviving as an independent country under the shadow of China’s power?

4.      What are Confucian principles? How do modern lives in Taiwan reflect these principles?
